A new boat trip service for the River Foyle in Derry has been officially launched by local company Blue Boat Tours.
“The River Foyle and the Lough are such a huge resource right here at our feet but they are underused and many people never get the chance to get out on the water,” says Blue Boat Tours spokeswoman Julie Bryson. “We felt there was a gap in the market for a boat service which could cater for tourists or small groups taking both long and short trips.”
We think our trips and tours will appeal not only to tourists but to local people –particularly families – as well giving them a new perspective on their city. You don’t need a large group of people to use this service, if even one person turns up for a tour we will take them”.
“We’ve had the service up and running for a few weeks now and what people love most is the great view of the city from the water, and they really enjoy passing under the city’s iconic Peace Bridge. We have invested a lot of effort in producing a lively and informative commentary which has been really well received by our passengers. Younger shipmates really enjoy the weekend Pirate trips. Some of our tours have even been lucky enough to come across seals during their trips.”
The “Wee Blue Boat” operates 7 days a week departing from the Foyle Marina just in front of the Council offices offering tours of differing durations as well as scheduled children’s pirate trips at weekends. The boat can cater for parties of up to 12 people. “We offer a one hour narrated ‘Three Bridges tour’ or a more condensed ‘Two Bridges’ tour for those with less time, these tours are not only aimed at tourists but will ensure even those who have spent their life living by the a Foyle will not only have a lovely trip but will learn something new during their tour! Special interest tours can be arranged to see the port at Lisahally or the remains of the old naval base or to go bird watching or sight-seeing. The boat is certified to operate the whole way to Greencastle, Co Donegal, at the mouth of Lough Foyle,” says Julie.
The boat is also available for private hire at just £10/hour per person (minimum charge £50), so its ideal for special occasions, birthdays or group trips – or even for a romantic evening trip for two on the River! “If you have any special requests or ideas we are only too willing to try to help.”
