Night-time magic returns to Letterkenny Town Park this September, when Gaeltacht artists’ collective An Cosán Glas display their spectacular trail of illuminated sculpture – “Loinnir” – on Friday 24th September. The event takes place as part of Letterkenny Culture Night.
Loinnir was held in the Town Park for Culture Night last year and “although we were a bit worried about taking it away from the sand dunes, it worked beautifully so we decided to do it again for 2010,” says spokesperson and artist Deirdre Ní Bhraonáin.
“What people love about Loinnir is that it is a truly unique experience – we don’t know of any other exhibition of its kind in Europe,” adds Deirdre. And it seems like the public agrees – this year’s Cosan Glas in Magheraroarty had a record 2,500 visitors. “We get great feedback from parents, who love the fact that their children can run around freely and interact with the sculptures.”
“Our project has been happening in various locations throughout North and West Donegal since 1995,” says Deirdre. Loinnir features works by leading Donegal Gaeltacht artists including Ewan Berry, Seamus Ó Cinnéide, Annjo Nic Ghiolla Cheara, Mícheál Mac Pháidín, Caoimhín Mac Aoidh, Leanne McLaughlin, Jim Osborne, Billy Wynter (Cornwall ) and Cathal Mac Fhionnghaile, as well as Deirdre herself. An Cosán Glas are hoping to bring Loinnir to Europe in the future and you can get a sneak preview of their work on www.cosanglas.com.
Culture Night is an initiative co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, in partnership with Donegal County Council and Letterkenny Town Council. Culture Night in Letterkenny is co-ordinated by Donegal County Council Cultural Services Department and presented in association with Letterkenny Town Council.
