Donegal racing driver, Damien Faulkner, is back in the US this week for the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at the Mazda Raceway in California. The Grand Prix runs from 2-4 May with the 2-hour feature race taking place on Sunday 4th May. Live coverage of the race starts at 6pm on Motor SportsTV UK (Sky 447). Faulkner is no stranger to the Mazda Raceway – also known as Laguna Seca – having taken pole position there in 2012 ahead of some tough competition. This time round, it will be his third race with Team GB Autosport in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship – North America’s biggest championship.
Driving will be shared between Damien and his GB Autosport team-mate Bob Faieta from California, and it will be a major change from their first two gruelling races, the Daytona 24 hour and the Sebring 12 hour. Faulkner says the team have just come off the back of a strong test in Chuckwalla – the first test for the whole team. “This was a crucial test which has laid proper foundations for the upcoming races. I believe we will be stronger as a unit which will help us adapt to the challenges that lie ahead.”
“The first two events involved massive emphasis on strategy and perhaps a little less on sheer speed. It’s the other way round now at Laguna with the 2-hour race. Both types I like, and both have their own unique difficulties. In terms of approach, for me, when I get aboard the car after Michael’s stint, it will be a sprint to the line on maximum attack.”
